Before Hogwarts, he is repeatedly made to feel as though he takes up too much space simply by existing.

So when he enters the wizarding world and discovers that people already know his name, fame feels uncomfortable rather than exciting.

Harry does not want to be famous.

He wants to belong.

That desire explains many of his strongest qualities.

Harry is fiercely loyal because friendship is something he once lacked. When Ron and Hermione become his friends, he values them more than status or recognition.

It also explains one of his weaknesses.

Harry sometimes rushes towards danger because he believes he should handle problems himself. He can be secretive, impulsive and unwilling to ask for help.

Percy Jackson approaches heroism differently.

Percy uses humour whenever the world becomes ridiculous, which happens frequently when Greek mythology enters modern life.

He questions authority much more openly than Harry does.

Gods, monsters and ancient traditions may impress other characters, but Percy is perfectly willing to point out when something makes no sense.

What drives Percy most strongly is loyalty too, but his version is almost rebellious.

If a rule clashes with protecting someone he cares about, Percy is likely to choose the person.

That makes him courageous.

It also gets him into trouble.

Harry and Percy therefore share an important quality: neither is motivated primarily by power.

They repeatedly become heroic because somebody else needs them.

But their relationships with destiny are different.

Harry carries the burden of being famous for something that happened when he was too young to remember it. He spends much of his journey learning what that history means and deciding what kind of person he wants to become despite it.

Percy is constantly surrounded by prophecies and powerful beings who seem convinced that his future has already been written.

His challenge is to prove that prophecy does not erase choice.

Both characters could easily decide that being special makes them superior.

They do not.

In fact, some of their greatest strengths come from people the powerful characters overlook.

Friends matter.

Family matters.

Kindness matters.

Ordinary decisions matter.

That is what makes both heroes relatable despite the impossible worlds around them.

Few readers will ever battle a mythical monster or dark wizard.

But almost everyone eventually faces a smaller version of their challenge:

When other people tell you who you are supposed to become, how much of your story will you allow yourself to write?

PERCY JACKSON & HARRY POTTER: HEROES WHO NEVER ASKED TO BE HEROES Character Comparison | Two Boys, Two Destinies Harry Potter and Percy Jackson have something frustratingly similar happen to them.
