THE LIBRARY CARD THAT FELT LIKE A KEY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Personal Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n

I remember my first library card because I nearly lost it before I reached home.<\/p>\n

It was a tiny rectangle of laminated paper, and I kept taking it out of my pocket to look at it.<\/p>\n

My name was printed across the front.<\/p>\n

Underneath it was a number.<\/p>\n

That was all.<\/p>\n

But to ten-year-old me, it looked remarkably official.<\/p>\n

Until then, books had always belonged to somebody else. Schoolbooks belonged to the school. The books in our classroom cupboard belonged to the teacher. The few books at home belonged to my older cousins before they belonged to me.<\/p>\n

The library was different.<\/p>\n

Thousands of books stood on shelves, and somehow this tiny card meant I was allowed to take one home.<\/p>\n

I began with the children’s section.<\/p>\n

At first, I chose books the way I chose sweets: by looking at the covers.<\/p>\n

Dragons were good.<\/p>\n

Secret passages were better.<\/p>\n

Any cover containing a treasure map automatically deserved serious consideration.<\/p>\n

The librarian watched me carry a growing pile around the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can only borrow two,\u201d she finally told me.<\/p>\n

This was devastating information.<\/p>\n

I sat cross-legged near the bottom shelf and began eliminating books.<\/p>\n

The dragon stayed.<\/p>\n

The detective story stayed.<\/p>\n

The space book was painfully returned.<\/p>\n

I carried my two winners to the desk.<\/p>\n

The librarian stamped them and pushed them towards me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen do I bring them back?\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed to the date.<\/p>\n

I counted the days.<\/p>\n

Two whole weeks.<\/p>\n

On the walk home, I imagined everything that could happen in fourteen days. I could finish both books. I could return them. I could choose two more.<\/p>\n

Then two more.<\/p>\n

Then two more.<\/p>\n

For the first time, I understood something that nobody had explained to me directly: I did not need to own every book I wanted to read.<\/p>\n

I only needed access to them.<\/p>\n

That changed everything.<\/p>\n

A library card looked small enough to disappear inside my pocket, but it unlocked places far bigger than our neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

One week I could be solving a mystery in London. The next, I could be travelling through space. After that, I could be reading about someone who had lived hundreds of years before I was born.<\/p>\n

I still like owning books.<\/p>\n

There is something special about seeing a favourite title on your own shelf.<\/p>\n

But that first library taught me another kind of relationship with books.<\/p>\n

You do not have to keep every story forever.<\/p>\n

Sometimes a story arrives, stays with you for a while and then returns to the shelf, ready to find somebody else.<\/p>\n

And somehow, even after you return the book, part of it remains yours.<\/p>\n
