It looked ordinary except for two words printed along its side:<\/p>\n

NOT YET.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He used it during maths.<\/p>\n

When he wrote 42<\/strong>, the pencil erased the answer by itself and replaced it with 36<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rohan stared.<\/p>\n

He checked the calculation.<\/p>\n

36 was correct.<\/p>\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, he tested it.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow it will rain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pencil erased rain<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow it will be sunny.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nothing happened.<\/p>\n

The next day was sunny.<\/p>\n

Rohan began writing bigger questions.<\/p>\n

I will win Friday’s race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erased.<\/p>\n

I will lose Friday’s race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erased.<\/p>\n

Confused, he tried:<\/p>\n

I will finish Friday’s race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sentence stayed.<\/p>\n

On Friday, halfway through the race, Rohan tripped.<\/p>\n

His knee hit the track.<\/p>\n

Everyone passed him.<\/p>\n

For one angry second, he considered staying down.<\/p>\n

Then he remembered the pencil.<\/p>\n

I will finish.<\/em><\/p>\n

He stood up.<\/p>\n

He crossed the line last.<\/p>\n

That evening, he wrote:<\/p>\n

The pencil tells me what will happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The words vanished.<\/p>\n

In their place appeared:<\/p>\n

NOT YET.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rohan understood.<\/p>\n

It had never shown him the future.<\/p>\n

It only refused to let him pretend that choices already made it inevitable.<\/p>\n
