On my eighteenth birthday, a letter appeared on my desk.<\/p>\n

Across the envelope were the words:<\/p>\n

OPEN WHEN YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW EVERYTHING TURNS OUT.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Underneath:<\/p>\n

FROM YOURSELF, AGE 50.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obviously, I opened it.<\/p>\n

Or at least I tried.<\/p>\n

My finger slipped beneath the flap.<\/p>\n

Then I stopped.<\/p>\n

What if it told me which university I attended?<\/p>\n

Who I married?<\/p>\n

Whether I became successful?<\/p>\n

Whether Mum and Dad were still alive?<\/p>\n

Whether the dreams I had at eighteen survived until fifty?<\/p>\n

Suddenly, the envelope felt dangerous.<\/p>\n

I put it in my drawer.<\/p>\n

For three days, I thought about nothing else.<\/p>\n

Whenever something uncertain happened, the letter became tempting.<\/p>\n

Exam results next month?<\/p>\n

The answer might be inside.<\/p>\n

My best friend moving overseas?<\/p>\n

Maybe the letter said whether we remained friends.<\/p>\n

The person I was afraid to tell how I felt?<\/p>\n

Perhaps Future Me had already written the ending.<\/p>\n

On Friday, I carried the letter to the roof.<\/p>\n

I told myself I would finally open it.<\/p>\n

Instead, I watched the city.<\/p>\n

Thousands of windows.<\/p>\n

Thousands of lives.<\/p>\n

Nobody below knew exactly what would happen next.<\/p>\n

That uncertainty had always frightened me.<\/p>\n

Now, for the first time, I wondered whether it was also the reason anything mattered.<\/p>\n

If the letter told me I became a writer, would I write because I loved it or because I was trying to obey the future?<\/p>\n

If it said I failed, would I stop before giving myself the chance to prove it wrong?<\/p>\n

If it told me who stayed in my life, would I begin treating everyone else as temporary?<\/p>\n

I returned downstairs.<\/p>\n

I found another envelope.<\/p>\n

On it, I wrote:<\/p>\n

TO MYSELF, AGE 50.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then I put the unopened future letter inside.<\/p>\n

I added a note.<\/p>\n

Dear Me,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank you for writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have decided I don’t want the answers yet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If we made it to fifty, I hope you understand.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I sealed both envelopes together.<\/p>\n

Thirty-two years later, on my fiftieth birthday, a package arrived.<\/p>\n

I recognised my eighteen-year-old handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

For more than three decades, I had wondered what was inside that original letter.<\/p>\n

Now I could finally find out.<\/p>\n

I opened the package.<\/p>\n

There was only one piece of paper.<\/p>\n

It was blank.<\/p>\n

Except for a sentence at the bottom.<\/p>\n
