Lifetime Achievement

Once Upon A Time

Started with the aim of bringing generations of children closer to stories from Indian mythologies, Amar Chitra Katha has been the late Anant Pai’s greatest creation. The ‘father of Indian comics’ began his career as a journalist in Times of India newspaper but went on to start his own comic series in 1967.

Amar Chitra Katha has released hundreds of titles and sold million copies. It still sells 3 million copies annually, with a total of more than 100 million copies sold till date.

There are a total of 440 titles in the much loved comic series of Amar Chitra Katha. Apart from this, ‘Uncle pai’ also devoted his life in the making of the well-known children’s magazine, Tinkle comics. The magazine includes short stories, quizzes, contests, factoids, non-fiction and fictional articles on Indian history, science and geography. For almost every kid born before 2000s, Tinkle and Amar Chitra Katha were an essential part of their childhood.

‘Uncle Pai’ was the nick name given to him by his audiences. The legacy of Amar Chitra Katha was carefully curated and created through months of research about the stories.

For his timeless contribution to Indian storytelling, Anant Pai (posthumously) was awarded with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at India’s first comic convention in 2011.
