Once Upon A Time

Gowthami Grandhalayam or Sri Gowthami Regional Library was started by Poet and social reformer Nalam Krishna Rao in 1898 in Rajahmundry. It is one among the renowned libraries in our country. With efforts from Krishna Rao it was merged with Sarvajana Grandhalayam in 1920 under the Societies Registration Act. The state government took over the library in 1979.This library has seen many a weather during its existence of 122 years.

This library is a place for hundreds of rare ,valuable and ancient books, palm leaf manuscripts and scripts on copper plates that cannot be found in any other library anywhere in the country.Presently the library has 1.03 lakh books in various languages Telugu,English,Sanskrit,urdu etc ,palm leaf manuscripts and  the first copy of Britannica Encyclopedia of 1771 is also available in this library.

This library is presently Digitalizing the rare and valuable books. Till today around 16000 rare book out of 30000 books have been digitalized by them.

This library has been awarded with the YSR lifetime achievement award last year for the exceptional work they are doing by preserving the valuable historical books and manuscripts.
